Goodbye Anno Domini, Hello Anno Rationalis

NAMUR—In an unprecedented move that has sent the nation back to Math class, Wallonia has proposed a revolutionary change to the calendar year count, following their successful overhaul of the school calendar two years ago. Today, as schools start their academic year, Wallonian officials have unveiled the comprehensive extended reform.

Gone will be the days of Anno Domini (AD) and Before Christ (BC). Enter the era of Anno Rationalis (AR) and Before Reason (BR). The new epoch will commence from a pivotal moment in human history: the advent of the Enlightenment. According to the proposal, the new Year Zero will be 1687 AD, the year Sir Isaac Newton published his groundbreaking work, “Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica,” which laid the foundation for modern science and rational thought.

Of course, the years preceding 1687 AD won’t be forgotten. Instead, they will be designated as BR – Before Reason. This will give historical events a fresh context. For example, the fall of the Roman Empire in 476 AD will now be known as 1211 BR, and the birth of William Shakespeare in 1564 AD will be 123 BR.

Under this new system, 2024 AD will become 337 AR (Anno Rationalis). The proposed timeline for this transition involves comprehensive public education and enterprise level campaigns to familiarise students, employees, and citizens with the new dates, alongside updates to all official documents, systems, and digital platforms.

For businesses, especially those in recruitment and HR, this change introduces significant logistical challenges. Hiring processes may need to be recalibrated, as birthdates, work anniversaries, and historical qualifications tied to the old system will require reinterpretation. “Think of the opportunities,” said Marie Curie, a spokesperson for the Temporal Reform Committee. “Our region’s workforce will reflect a forward-thinking approach to progress.”

Additionally, employers may need to re-educate current employees and integrate the new calendar into HR platforms, interview processes, and employee onboarding systems. As companies adapt, new opportunities for HR consulting, system upgrades, and cross-cultural training may emerge, ensuring that businesses not only survive this temporal shift but thrive within it.

So, mark your calendars (if you dare) and prepare to enter the brave new world of Anno Rationalis. Because in Wallonia, the future isn’t just coming; it’s being recalculated.
